CDC signals Biden-era extension of eviction moratorium

2021 continues to look bleak for landlords

In a media statement released yesterday by CDC Director Rochelle P. Walensky, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention eviction moratorium will again be extended – this time until “at least” March 31, 2021.  Housing providers in Illinois should be concerned that this will be another application of “death by a thousand cuts” and the CDC will be back for an extension before all is said and done.    Early indications from President Joe Biden have pointed to a federal ban on evictions until September 30, 2021.

Seattle Bans Winter Evictions – Could it Happen in Chicago?

Eviction to be Banned in Seattle

We all know about the annual winter moratorium on evictions in Chicagoland.  Every year, around Christmas and New Year’s Day, the courts stop the Sheriff from enforcing eviction orders.  The Cook County Sheriff is also ordered not to evict when it is too cold or weather conditions make an eviction dangerous for the tenants or Sheriff’s officers.  However, the moratorium is temporary, fairly short, and eventually, things get back on track.  The City of Seattle has thrown those concepts right out the window.  The Seattle City counsel yesterday voted 7-0 (that’s right, a unanimous vote) to BAN most evictions for a three month period.  Could it happen in Chicago?

Kennth Wrights, Jr. issued the expected General Order 2019-01 which sets out the annual eviction moratorium for the enforcement of Cook County eviction orders for December 2019 and January 2020.  As usual, the order applies to residential (not commercial) eviction in Cook County.

Cold weather shuts down Cook County evictions

It has not yet been dubbed a polar vortex, but whether it is a “bomb cyclone”, “polar vortex”, or arctic air mass, one thing is certain, it is COLD!  Despite the end of the scheduled holiday moratorium on eviction enforcement in Cook County, with temperatures expected to be below 15 through the weekend, the Sheriff is not evicting this week.
